The next morning Hopper scrambled out of bed and began searching the room. He checked the windowsill, but there was no sign of the dragonfly. “Fairy-fail!”
“My thoughts exactly,” Daring said. He stood in front of his mirror, combing his thick blond hair. “But there’s no need for you to be upset. It’s true that there’s a pimple in the middle of my forehead, but I have the strength and courage to battle this enemy.” He pulled a lock of hair so that it hung over the nearly invisible pustule.
“That’s not why I said fairy-fail,” Hopper grumbled. “I’m looking for a dragonfly that was in our room last night. Have you seen it?”
Daring wasn’t listening. “Even those of us born with perfect heroic features must deal with a pimple now and then.” He spritzed himself with his signature cologne. Then he slid into his letterman jacket and opened the bedroom door.
“Oh, poor Daring!” his groupies cried as he stepped into the hall.
“Fear not, ladies. My face will return to normal in a few days. Until then, we shall endure this hardship together.” And off he strode.
Hardship? Hopper shook his head. He currently had a pimple on his chin, but no one was saying, “Oh, poor Hopper!”
As he dressed in his shorts, vest, velvet blazer, and loafers, Hopper wondered if there was still time to run into the Village of Book End and buy something for Briar. The signed photo of Daring lay on the nightstand. Surely he could do better than that.
Zzzzt.
The dragonfly landed on Hopper’s sleeve. “There you are,” he said with a smile. “I’m so glad to see you.” The dragonfly wiggled its rump. Was it happy to see Hopper, too? “Remember how I said I needed a present for Briar? Would you help me?” The dragonfly nodded. It climbed up his sleeve and perched on Hopper’s shoulder.
As quickly as he could, Hopper made his way out of the dormitory.
